Geometry for the slot antenna: (a) Top view and
(b) side view

A microstrip-fed aperture coupled microstrip antenna was designed by Rao et. al. [1].  A variant of this antenna was implemented in FEKO for the following specifications:

  • 5.5 GHz centre frequency
  • 50 Ω input impedance
  • Substrate, ε = 3.2, height = 1.0 mm

Dimensions of geometry are:

  • dy = 29 mm
  • dx = 18 mm
  • Ws = 2 mm
  • Ls = 54 mm
  • Wm = 2.35 mm
  • Wp = Lp = 2t = 0.9dx = 16.2 mm

FEKO's implementation of the planar Greens function features the ability to model the slots in the ground plane as magnetic triangles, which means that only the slots are meshed and not the ground plane itself, saving significantly on simulation resources.
