CRLH Extended Equivalent Circuit (EEC) FDTD Method and its Application to an Open Metamaterial-Loaded Resonator

A. Rennings, S. Otto, C. Caloz, and I. Wolff

A novel composite right/left-handed extended equivalent circuit (CRLH-EEC) FDTD method ispresented and applied to the analysis of an open MTM-loaded resonator. This analysis evidences interesting phenomena, based on NRI confinement and surface plasmon propagation from inspection of the field distributions at the resonance frequency. Due to the absence of lossy electric walls, a high Q, larger than 1500, is achieved; only leakage losses due to the open nature of the cavity limit this Q. Such a cavity may lead to novel types of high-Q planar resonators for microwave oscillators.
