Small Printed Ultrawideband Antenna With Reduced Ground Plane Effect
A small printed UWB microstrip patch antenna is proposed by Chen et.al. in [1]. The ground plane effect is reduced in the design by cutting a notch from the radiator to result in ultra wide-band (UWB) antenna. The design is based on Rogers 4003 substrate. A surface equivalence model (SEP) was created for the antenna. Figure 1(a) presents the design specification from [1] and the resulting FEKO model. Figure 1(b) presents the 3D view of the SEP model.

The FEKO model was simulated across the band of interest to compute S11 for the design. Figure 2 compares the measured and simulated data from [1] with the FEKO simulation result. The FEKO model agrees well with the published result.

Figure 3 shows the antenna with the currents simulated at 3.029 GHz, 4.941 GHz, 6.118 GHz and 10.235 GHz respectively. Note that at lower frequencies, the majority of the currents are concentrated in the vicinity of the notch area .
