Profile of career opportunities in computational electromagnetics software development.

Career Profiles

Careers in computational electromagnetics (CEM) can be sorted into three main catagories:

Engineering

  • Product specification, where personnel determine which new features should be added to the product and also how to go about doing this.  A detailed knowledge of the product and underlying architecture is required.
  • Kernel development, where CEM specialists work to add new numerical methods to the product and to optimise existing ones.  They also ensure that the computational engine runs smoothly and optimally on as many hardware platforms as possible, including processor architecture, networking technologies and operating system specifics in their considerations.

Application Engineering

  • Marketing, where engineers work with the product on a daily basis, creating material to promote the strengths and abilities of the product but also to educate customers about the finer detail of working with a CEM tool.
  • Support, where engineers assist customers who have questions about the product.  Support engineers know the usage of the software very well and are experts at exploiting its features.
  • Consulting projects, where engineers work on large simulation projects for customers without the skill or resources to do so themselves.  Models are created and verified before simulations are done to find answers to customer questions. 

CAD Environment Developing

  • CAD development, consists of a team of programmers who leverage the latest programming technology to create a 3D CAD environment for the creation of simulation models, specification of simulation parameters and visualisation of results.
