A Study of Large Cylindrical Arrays of UHF Patch Dipole Antenna Elements
James D. Krieger and Alan J. Fenn
MIT Lincoln Laboratory
A directive cylindrical array prototype made of conformal patch dipole elements for operation in the UHF Band from 420 to 450 MHz has been developed. The prototype array has a 1.55 m diameter with 16 dipole elements spaced in approximately one-half wavelength intervals along the circumference of the cylinder. In general, the array could be fabricated to include an arbitrary number of dipole elements per row as well as an arbitrary number of rows. This article describes the design, analysis, fabrication, and anechoic chamber tests for this prototype antenna. Simulated results for larger arrays are also discussed.
