In this paper, the information capacity of a single and a dual-antenna system are investigated and compared. We consider the antennas in the transmission mode. The investigation is carried out using a multi-band antenna that can be used for handset device applications. The near-field effects from the device housing, the battery, and the user head, are also included in the study. The investigation is carried out at the GSM frequency band and at the higher UMTS frequency band. The results show that the multiantenna system can achieve a higher maximum transmission rate compared to the single-antenna system. The achieved transmission gain for the multi-antenna system is more significant at the higher frequency bands and less pronounced at the GSM band. The investigation also shows that the user head has a major impact on the achieved gain and this impact is translated, in the case under study, to an increase in the antenna-system capacity.
