Design of Monocone Antennas for Consistent Multi-Octave Performance

Maxwell J. Perez, Dejan S. Filipovic

University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado, USA

Physically small and lightweight vertically polarized antennas with consistent near- and far-field operation over several octaves bandwidth are desired for many applications including ultrawideband communications, software radio, electromagnetic compatibility testing, electronic support measures, just to mention a few. In that light, monopole or dipole like antennas are often considered, however their inherent bandwidth is only a few percent. Computational studies are conducted with method of moments and finite elements commercial software tools, EMSS FEKO and ANSYS HFSS, respectively. Obtained conclusions are supported with thorough measurements.
