Development of a Deployable UHF Crossed Dipole Antenna Suitable for Nano Satellites

W. Lippincott

Naval Research Laboratory Washington, DC, USA

A small deployable UHF circularly polarized crossed dipole antenna was developed suitable for small- or nano- satellites. This antenna has the unique feature of isolating its small ground plane from the rest of the satellite structure, thereby enabling it to direct the circularly polarized radiation in a pattern ideal for ground coverage. Nitinol makes for ideal antenna elements because it is easily deployable.
