The analysis of a microstrip patch antenna using computational electromagnetic tool, FEKO, is presented in this paper. The antenna is a circularly polarized stacked patch element and it is shown that it can be confgured for both dual-band and wideband operation by changing the sizes of the radiators and their spacings. Pattern symmetry is maintained by utilizing four probes to feed the antenna. The electrical performance of a conventional dual-fed patch is compared to the proposed quad-fed antenna. Varying degrees of model complexity are investigated to observe the tradeoff in electrical performance and it is shown that a simplified computational model provides accurate results. Interactions such as antenna coupling and pattern deformation are summarized by modeling two patch antennas in close proximity. Validation is performed by measurements.
