Ultra-wideband Triple-Ellipse Inverted-Hat Antenna for Aircraft Communications

ElectroScience Laboratory, The Ohio State University

A compact monopole-type ultra-wideband triple-ellipse inverted-hat antenna (TEIHA) is proposed to operate from 50MHz up to 2GHz. The algorithm to generate the profile of the antenna is introduced. Employing the technique of method of moments (MoM), the simulation shows that the proposed element with 15’’ in aperture and 6’’ in height can achieves -15dBi gain at 57 MHz (when it is almost λ/16 in aperture size) in presence of a infinite ground plane. Impedance and gain pattern performance are also investigated. The proposed antenna is especially suited for aircraft communication systems.
