Design and Analysis of a Novel Pent-band Antenna for Handheld Applications

We introduce in this paper the design of a novel pent-band antenna for handheld applications. The antenna is based on a wire monopole that is wrapped around a supporting dielectric frame in a three dimensional form. The antenna covers GSM 800/900/1800/1900 and UMTS 2200 bands. It has a remarkably small size compared to a PIFA featuring the same performance. The design is evaluated and optimized through measurements and through numerical analysis using the Method of Moments-based solver FEKO®.
