Two arm spiral antennas usually have wideband characteristics (these antennas usually have constant beam width and circular polarization over a broad range of frequencies), and thus they are suitable for communicating (transmitting and receiving) over bands of frequencies (multiple channels). At lower frequencies, for a given size, these antennas tend to have poor performance (high S11, low gain and high axial ratio). This can be improved by increasing the diameter of the spirals. But the real question is, can the poor performance at low frequencies be improved without sacrificing the compactness of the antenna? This paper shows an innovative approach which can improve the performance of the antenna without increasing the size of the antenna.
